PDP Rebuilds Amid Defections Ahead of 2025 Convention

Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Fintiri has expressed optimism about the People’s Democratic Party’s (PDP) prospects, stating that its members are working to rebuild the party into a strong, unified, and focused entity capable of leading Nigeria again. This comes amid a series of high-profile defections to other parties, including the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Recently, Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State and Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State defected to the APC, dealing a significant blow to the PDP. However, Governor Fintiri remains bullish about the party’s future, citing efforts to strengthen its structures and prepare for upcoming challenges. On Thursday, he inspected the venue for the PDP’s forthcoming national convention, scheduled for November 15, and praised the preparations underway in Ibadan, Oyo State.

Fintiri, who led the PDP National Convention Organising Committee Executive on the inspection visit, commended Governor Seyi Makinde’s efforts in hosting the event, describing them as “excellent” and indicative of the party’s readiness for the convention. The governor’s comments suggest that despite the recent setbacks, the PDP is focused on regrouping and repositioning itself as a viable alternative to the ruling APC.

The PDP’s national convention is expected to be a crucial event in the party’s efforts to revamp its structures and chart a new course ahead of future elections. With the party seeking to reclaim its position as a leading force in Nigerian politics, the success of the convention will be closely watched by political observers and stakeholders. As the PDP works to rebuild and regain momentum, its ability to present a united front and articulate a compelling vision for Nigeria’s future will be key to its prospects in the years ahead.
