Preparations for Putin-Trump summit in ‘full swing’ – Hungarian FM — RT World News

Hungary and Russia have begun preparations for a planned summit between Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump in Budapest. Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjártó said he spoke with Russian presidential aide Yury Ushakov about the upcoming meeting and confirmed that arrangements are under way. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio are also scheduled to hold talks later.

The summit was announced by President Trump on Thursday after a phone call with Putin that lasted more than two hours. Trump described the conversation as “very productive” and said “great progress” had been made. The Kremlin echoed this sentiment, with Ushakov stating that preparations for the summit would begin immediately. Budapest was proposed as the venue by Trump and supported by Putin.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán expressed his country’s willingness to host the talks, calling the prospect “great news for the peace‑loving people of the world.” He described Hungary as an “island of peace” and confirmed that he had spoken with Putin by phone. Hungary says it is ready to ensure security for the summit, which is expected to focus on the Ukraine conflict.

This will not be the first meeting between Putin and Trump; they last met in mid‑August in Alaska to discuss Ukraine and the restoration of Russia‑U.S. relations. Although no breakthrough was achieved, both leaders called that summit productive. Contacts between Moscow and Washington have since slowed, but Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov said the Alaska process was “not finished” and that the two nations can still “do much.”

The upcoming Budapest summit signals a continued effort by both countries to engage in dialogue and address pressing issues. Preparations are ongoing, and while an exact date has not been announced, the meeting is expected to take place in the near future. The international community will be watching closely, as the summit could affect the ongoing Ukraine conflict and the broader Russia‑U.S. relationship.
