The National Youth Council of Nigeria has issued a cautionary statement to the country’s youths, urging them not to take part in the planned Free Nnamdi Kanu protest scheduled for 20 October 2025. The council’s interim management committee, led by Barr. Buhari Shehu, warned that the demonstration could undermine law and order. In its statement, the council noted that the Nigerian Police Force has secured a court order from the Federal High Court in Abuja restraining the organizers and participants of the protest.
The United States Embassy in Abuja has also advised its nationals in Nigeria to avoid the protest, citing potential risks. Accordingly, the youth council called on Nigerian youths to exercise restraint, prioritize peace, stability and national security, and seek alternative, lawful avenues for expressing grievances and demands. The council reaffirmed its commitment to promoting youth welfare, peace and development in Nigeria.
In its appeal, the National Youth Council emphasized the need for young people to unite in safeguarding the nation, reminding them that Nigeria is their only home. The protest is linked to the case of Nnamdi Kanu, a prominent figure in the country’s southeast region, and has attracted attention from international bodies, including the U.S. Embassy, which has urged caution.
The council’s statement underscores the importance of maintaining law and order while acknowledging the right to peaceful expression of grievances. As the protest date approaches, the warning may help mitigate potential risks and encourage a peaceful resolution. The situation is expected to be closely monitored by local and international observers, with a focus on ensuring the safety and security of all involved.
