APC not pressuring govs to defect - Morka

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has dismissed concerns that its recent influx of defectors from opposition parties could undermine Nigeria’s democratic landscape. National Publicity Secretary Felix Morka told Arise News that the defections are a legitimate exercise of constitutional rights and do not signal a decline in democracy. He emphasized that members of the Peoples Democratic Party, Labour Party and African Democratic Congress who have joined the APC are simply exercising their democratic freedom to choose among competing party alternatives, and that the APC is not coercing governors to switch allegiance.

Morka challenged the notion that the defections pose a threat to democracy, describing such arguments as misleading and unfair. He argued that it would be disingenuous to suggest the APC should act as a gatekeeper deciding who can or cannot join the party. Instead, he stressed that democracy is a system of freedoms, and it is unacceptable to limit individuals’ rights to choose their own political affiliations.

The party has indeed seen a significant number of defectors from opposition parties in recent months, prompting worries about the potential impact on the country’s democratic system. However, Morka’s comments indicate that the APC views these defections as a natural consequence of democratic competition. By joining the APC, these politicians are exercising their constitutional rights and contributing to the democratic process.

This development highlights the ongoing evolution of Nigeria’s political landscape, where politicians are increasingly willing to switch parties in pursuit of their goals. As the country navigates its complex democratic terrain, the APC’s stance on defections will be closely watched by observers and analysts. The party’s position may have significant implications for Nigeria’s democratic future, and it remains to be seen how the situation will unfold in the coming months.
