Cross River Governor Cracks Down on Market Extortion

Governor Bassey Otu of Cross River State has expressed concern over the harassment of elderly market women by individuals posing as tax and rate collectors. These incidents have been reported in major markets across Calabar, Ikom, Ogoja, and other towns. The governor has directed those responsible to cease their activities, which he described as criminal and extortionist.

According to reports, hired young men have been intimidating and assaulting traders who refuse to pay alleged government levies in several major markets in Calabar. Governor Otu stated that such aggression and exploitation are damaging the reputation of his administration. He emphasized that his government does not authorize the use of force or intimidation to collect levies.

During a feast marking his 66th birthday, where he hosted over 7,000 widows, Governor Otu denied authorizing any task force or agency to collect levies through force or intimidation. He condemned the harassment of residents, particularly widows and market women, noting that it inflicts unnecessary hardship on already struggling citizens. The governor acknowledged that some individuals have been collecting unnecessary tolls, causing pain to the people.

To address the issue, Governor Otu has warned that anyone caught extorting money in the name of the government will be required to refund the collections in full. He encouraged residents to report any incidents to the government, which has established a complaint desk. The governor’s administration will take action against those found guilty of extortion, ensuring that they make full refunds.

The governor’s stance aims to protect vulnerable citizens, such as widows and market women, from exploitation. By taking a firm stance against extortion and harassment, the administration seeks to improve the business environment and promote the well-being of residents in Cross River State. The establishment of a complaint desk provides a mechanism for residents to report incidents, allowing the government to take swift action against perpetrators.
