On the first day of TwitchCon 2025 in San Diego, Emiru—a popular streamer with nearly two million followers—was assaulted during her meet‑and‑greet. According to Emiru, her attacker crossed multiple barriers, grabbed her face and attempted to kiss her before her own security intervened. She claims TwitchCon security was nowhere to be found and that nearby personnel did not react to the incident. In a social‑media post, Emiru expressed disappointment with Twitch’s handling of the situation, saying she was “hurt and upset” by the company’s response.
This incident is not isolated. In recent years, TwitchCon has been plagued by safety issues, including a foam‑pit disaster in 2022 that left an attendee with a broken back and harassment of Twitch partners by Kick‑affiliated streamers in 2024. Several major creators, such as Valkyrae and Hasan Piker, have publicly opted out of attending the 2025 event, citing safety concerns. Compared with other conventions like San Diego Comic‑Con and VidCon, TwitchCon’s safety measures have been criticized as inadequate. The event’s design—emphasizing accessibility and close proximity between streamers and fans—can create a sense of vulnerability for creators.
While Twitch has implemented safety measures on its platform, its approach to security at TwitchCon has been largely reactive rather than preventive. Twitch CEO Dan Clancy acknowledged the challenges of ensuring safety at the event, describing it as a complex issue that requires ongoing investment and effort. However, his comments have been met with skepticism by some creators, who feel the company is not doing enough to protect them.
The assault on Emiru has sparked a broader conversation about the safety of streamers and the responsibility of platforms like Twitch to protect their creators. As the streaming industry continues to grow, safety must become a top priority.
