The Nigerian Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has announced a series of significant seizures and arrests in its ongoing fight against drug trafficking and abuse. According to a statement by the agency’s Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, the operations took place in several states, including Lagos, Adamawa, Ekiti, Oyo and Ogun.
In Lagos, NDLEA officers intercepted a cargo of frozen snails that concealed 2,300 tramadol pills at the airport. The pills were hidden in the luggage of a 48‑year‑old UK‑based public health assistant and were destined for Manchester, UK. In the same city, a cargo agent was arrested for attempting to export 15 parcels of “skunk” cannabis concealed in electrical bulbs to the Democratic Republic of Congo. At a courier company in Lagos, operatives also thwarted an attempt to ship 810 bromazepam pills hidden in women’s clothing to the United States.
In Adamawa, a suspect driving from Benin Republic was stopped with 38,270 tramadol pills concealed in a car. Meanwhile, the agency destroyed 53,250 kg of skunk on a cannabis farm in Ekiti state and recovered 1,140 kg of the same substance during an operation in Ondo state. Additional seizures included 596 kg of skunk in Oyo state, 273 kg in Ogun state and 74.5 kg in Enugu state. At the Apapa port in Lagos, NDLEA intercepted 80,000 bottles of codeine‑based syrup in a container from India.
NDLEA Chairman, retired Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa, commended the officers and staff involved, urging them to continue their efforts in the war against drug abuse. The agency’s War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) sensitisation activities also continued in schools, worship centres and communities nationwide. These recent seizures and arrests demonstrate NDLEA’s commitment to reducing the availability of illicit drugs, promoting public health and safety, and addressing drug abuse through a balanced approach of enforcement, education and advocacy.
