Ooni and Alaafin mend rift and form Yoruba unity council

In a significant development, the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, and the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi, have resolved their two-month rift. The reconciliation took place on the sidelines of the 90th birthday celebration of businessman Kensington Adebutu in Lagos. Following their meeting, the two monarchs announced the formation of a joint council aimed at promoting Yoruba unity.

According to a joint communiqué issued by the Ooni and Alaafin, the council will focus on fostering peace, preserving cultural heritage, and driving socioeconomic growth in the Southwest region. The communiqué, signed by both monarchs and witnessed by Adebutu, emphasized their commitment to upholding the values of mutual respect and brotherhood. The statement noted, “Today marks a defining chapter in our shared history. We reaffirm our dedication to promoting harmony among all Yoruba sons and daughters.”

The rift between the two monarchs began when the Ooni of Ife conferred the title of “Okanlomo of Yorubaland” on businessman Dotun Sanusi. The Alaafin of Oyo had taken exception to this, describing it as an affront and claiming exclusive authority to bestow titles covering the entire Yorubaland. He had subsequently demanded that the Ooni revoke the title within 48 hours.

The resolution of the rift is seen as a positive step towards promoting unity and cooperation among the Yoruba people. The joint council is expected to play a key role in advancing the socioeconomic and cultural interests of the region. With this development, the Ooni and Alaafin have reaffirmed their commitment to working together for the benefit of their people. The move is likely to have a positive impact on the region, promoting peace and stability.
