APGA Presidential Candidate Quits Party and Politics

The 2023 presidential candidate for the All Progressives Grand Alliance, Justice Peter Umeadi, has announced his resignation from the party and withdrawal from partisan politics in Nigeria. In a letter to the APGA Ward 1 Chairman in Anaocha Local Government Area of Anambra State, Umeadi expressed gratitude to the party for the opportunity to run as its presidential candidate in the 2023 election.

Umeadi’s decision to leave the party marks the end of his affiliation with APGA, which began on March 20, 2019, when he joined the party at Nri Ward 1. He went on to secure the party’s presidential ticket on June 1, 2022, making him the first jurist and law academic to emerge as a presidential candidate for a major political party in Nigeria. His campaign focused on the principles of rule of law, separation of powers, and due process, with a vision for social progress and equitable opportunities for all Nigerians.

As a respected jurist, Umeadi’s candidacy brought a unique perspective to the political landscape. His commitment to upholding the principles of democracy and promoting social justice resonated with many Nigerians. Although his resignation from the party and withdrawal from politics may come as a surprise to some, it is a significant development in Nigeria’s political scene.

Umeadi’s letter, addressed to Mr. Onyekwelu Jideobi, the Chairman of APGA Ward 1, Nri, formally notified the party of his decision to resign and withdraw from partisan politics. The move may have implications for the political landscape in Nigeria, particularly in the context of the country’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its democratic institutions and promote good governance.

As Nigeria continues to navigate its complex political terrain, the resignation of a prominent figure like Justice Peter Umeadi serves as a reminder of the challenges and opportunities that exist in the country’s political landscape. With his withdrawal from politics, Umeadi’s legacy as a champion of the rule of law and social justice will likely endure, even as the country looks to the future and the next generation of leaders to shape its political destiny.
