Anambra Guber: Why voting will not take place in two Polling Units - Amupitan

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that voting will not take place in two polling units in Anambra State during the upcoming governorship election on November 8. INEC Chairman Prof. Joash Amupitan explained that the decision stems from the lack of registered voters in those units. Consequently, the election will be held in 5,718 of the state’s 5,720 polling units, with the two exceptions excluded because they have no registered voters.

At a meeting of the Inter‑Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES) on the Anambra governorship election, Prof. Amupitan disclosed that the commission plans to deploy 24,000 personnel for the polls. The National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, represented by Hassan Abdullahi, emphasized that robust security measures are being implemented to ensure a smooth election process. These measures include enhanced surveillance, the deployment of sufficient security personnel, and improved intelligence gathering to prevent any attempts to disrupt the electoral process.

The ICCES is also engaging with political party leaders and local stakeholders to promote peace and discourage violence during the elections. All participating parties and their candidates are expected to advocate for peace and encourage their supporters to respect the integrity of the electoral system. The ICCES has warned that any form of violence during the elections will be met with a strong and uncompromising response.

The Anambra State governorship election is a significant event in Nigeria’s electoral calendar, and the steps taken by INEC and the ICCES aim to ensure a free, fair, and peaceful process. With the deployment of 24,000 personnel and the implementation of robust security measures, the stage is set for a successful election. The people of Anambra State will go to the polls on November 8 to choose their next governor, and the outcome will be closely watched by the nation and the international community.
