The Zamfara chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has reaffirmed its stability despite recent defections to the All Progressives Congress (APC). The party’s assurance follows the departure of Maharazu Faru, a member of the Zamfara State House of Assembly, who defected to the APC, citing Governor Dauda Lawal’s alleged failure to fulfill campaign promises. Faru, who represented the Maradun II constituency, argued that the governor had not addressed key challenges, including insecurity—a primary reason for his own election.
The PDP, however, downplayed Faru’s defection, saying it was not surprised by his decision. Party Publicity Secretary Halliru Andi warned that those who prioritize personal interests over the collective will of the people often find themselves on the wrong side of history. The PDP maintains that Governor Lawal’s leadership has been instrumental in restoring hope, strengthening institutions, and safeguarding the lives and livelihoods of Zamfara’s residents. The party points to ongoing reforms and development initiatives as evidence of its commitment to progress and compassion.
Despite Faru’s exit, the PDP remains confident in its popularity, asserting that the people of Zamfara will continue to support the party. Currently, the PDP holds a majority in the Zamfara State House of Assembly with 14 members, while the APC has 10 lawmakers. The party has urged its members and supporters to remain steadfast, emphasizing that no defection can undermine its foundation or the will of the people.
With the next elections approaching, the PDP is optimistic about its prospects, predicting an overwhelming victory at all levels. The defections of Faru and other PDP executives from five wards have not significantly impacted the party’s overall strength in the state. PDP leadership reiterated its commitment to the people of Zamfara, emphasizing dedication to addressing the state’s challenges and promoting development. As the political landscape in Zamfara continues to evolve, the PDP remains a dominant force, with its sights set on the upcoming elections.
