Ten tourists and local pilot die in plane crash in Kenya

A light aircraft carrying tourists crashed in Kenya’s Kwale region on Tuesday, killing 11 people – ten Hungarian and German tourists and a Kenyan pilot. The plane, operated by Mombasa Air Safari, had taken off from the coastal resort town of Diani and was en route to the Maasai Mara National Reserve, a popular destination famed for its annual wildebeest migration. The reserve lies west of the coastline and is normally reachable by a two‑hour direct flight.

According to officials, the aircraft burst into flames on impact, leaving a charred wreckage in a hilly, forested area. Witnesses reported hearing a loud bang and later found unrecognizable human remains at the scene. The crash was initially reported to have occurred at 05:30 local time, but the Kenyan transport minister later corrected the time to 08:35. The pilot failed to communicate with the control tower after take‑off, and attempts to contact him were unsuccessful for 30 minutes before the aircraft was located.

Kenya’s aircraft accident investigation department has launched an inquiry into the incident, though the cause of the crash remains unknown. The government has reiterated that aviation safety is its “highest priority,” and the tragedy is likely to reinforce this emphasis. As the investigation proceeds, more details are expected to emerge in the coming days. The accident underscores the importance of maintaining rigorous safety standards in the aviation industry, especially in regions with high tourism traffic.
