The Niger State Independent Electoral Commission (NSIEC) has completed preparations for the Local Government Council elections slated for November 1, 2025. Ten political parties will contest chairmanship and councillorship seats across the state’s 25 local government areas. The ruling All Progressives Congress, the Peoples Democratic Party, the Social Democratic Party and six other parties are among the contestants.
NSIEC Chairman Mohammed Jibrin Imam affirmed the commission’s commitment to an election that reflects the will of the people and upholds integrity. He announced that the distribution of both sensitive and non‑sensitive materials to all 25 local government areas has been finished, paving the way for a smooth electoral process. In line with the Electoral Act, the commission has monitored the primaries of all participating parties and engaged stakeholders to ensure a level playing field.
To promote peaceful elections, all ten parties have signed a peace accord pledging a free, fair and credible contest. Imam urged political actors to adhere strictly to the accord and maintain fairness throughout the campaign. Security measures for election day include a restriction on vehicular movement from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., except for essential services.
The election will use a manual accreditation system, with more than 5,000 ad hoc staff deployed across the state’s 274 wards. As the polls approach, the commission’s dedication to a transparent and credible process is crucial, given the significant implications for Niger State’s governance and development. International observers will be closely monitoring the effort, which marks a positive step toward a peaceful and transparent electoral environment.
