PDP crisis deepens as Sule Lamido asks court to stop convention

A former governor of Jigawa State, Alhaji Sule Lamido, has filed a lawsuit against the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at the Federal High Court in Abuja, seeking to halt the party’s national convention scheduled for 15 November in Ibadan, Oyo State. The convention is intended to elect new national officers to manage the party’s affairs. Lamido, a founding member of the PDP and former Minister of Foreign Affairs, is contesting the planning process for the convention. His suit, filed under reference FHC/ABJ/CD/2229/2025, alleges that he was unfairly denied a nomination form to run for the office of national chairman. The pleading was submitted by his lawyer, Jephthah Chikodi Njikonye, SAN.

The plaintiff claims that the PDP failed to adhere to its own constitution and guidelines in organizing the convention, arguing that the party did not provide equal opportunities for eligible members—including himself—to contest the elections. Lamido is seeking a mandatory injunction compelling the party to make the nomination form available to him. He also requests an order prohibiting the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from supervising or recognizing the convention until he is permitted to contest.

If granted, the injunction could delay or disrupt the party’s plans to elect new national officers. The lawsuit underscores the internal conflicts that have plagued the PDP in recent times. The national convention is a crucial event that could shape the party’s future direction and leadership, and its outcome will be closely watched. The added legal complexity may affect the party’s stability and growth, and the court’s ruling will have significant implications for the PDP’s ability to proceed with the convention as scheduled.
