Over 1,000 members of the New Nigerian People’s Party and the Kwankwasiyya Movement in Kano State have defected to the All Progressives Congress. The defections were announced at a gathering held at the Fine Time Events Centre in Kano, where the group cited President Bola Tinubu’s and Senator Barau Jibrin’s interventions as the motivation behind their decision.
According to a statement by Ismail Mudashir, Special Adviser to the Deputy President of the Senate on Media and Publicity, the defectors were led by Aminu Minjibir. Minjibir said that, despite their tireless efforts for the Kwankwasiyya Movement, they were disappointed with the New Nigerian People’s Party’s performance in Kano State and felt the party was not adequately addressing the needs of the people of Kano.
Senator Jibrin welcomed the defectors into the All Progressives Congress, describing their decision as a wise choice. He noted that the New Nigerian People’s Party’s popularity was waning, while the APC continues to thrive as the largest party in Africa, with notable achievements in human development. The senator commended the defectors for making the right decision, emphasizing the APC’s commitment to the well‑being of its members and the nation.
The mass defection is significant because it reflects a shifting political landscape in Kano State. The APC has been working to expand its base in the region, and this development is seen as a major boost to those efforts. The defectors’ move also indicates the party’s growing appeal to former members of the New Nigerian People’s Party and the Kwankwasiyya Movement.
The defections are expected to impact political dynamics in Kano State, potentially influencing future elections and the balance of power in the region. As the APC continues to grow in strength, it remains to be seen how the New Nigerian People’s Party and other opposition parties will respond to this latest development.
