The Anambra State Governor, Prof Chukwuma Soludo, has pledged that all candidates in the upcoming governorship election will honor a peace accord. Speaking on behalf of the candidates, Soludo made the pledge during a peace‑deal signing ceremony attended by all 16 candidates and their party chairmen. The event, initiated by the Kukah Centre, aimed to promote a peaceful electoral process.

Soludo noted that Anambra State has a history of intense electoral competition, but the candidates have agreed to set aside their differences and commit to a peaceful election. He emphasized that the candidates know each other well and will come together after the vote to give thanks, regardless of the outcome. He urged his colleagues to internalize the peace accord, share it with their campaign teams, and uphold transparency, due process, and integrity throughout the election.

Representing the Chairman of the National Peace Committee, Gen Abdulsalami Abukakar, Gen Martin Luther Agwai called for peace throughout the electoral process. Agwai stressed that democracy can thrive only in an environment of restraint and respect for human life, and he highlighted the crucial role of traditional rulers, religious leaders, and the media in fostering peace and unity.

The peace accord signing ceremony marks a significant step toward a peaceful and credible election in Anambra State. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the police have been urged to cooperate in securing the electoral process and ensuring its integrity. With all candidates committing to the accord, the stage is set for a transparent election that reflects the will of the people.

Given the state’s history of fierce electoral contests, the upcoming vote will be closely watched. The ceremony demonstrates the candidates’ commitment to democratic principles, peace, and stability. As the election approaches, all eyes will be on Anambra State to see whether the peace accord holds and whether the election is conducted in a free, fair, and peaceful manner.
