PDP: I’m here to heal wounds - Factional Acting Chair, Mohammed

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has appointed a new acting national chairman, Abdulrahman Mohammed, who pledged on Monday to restore unity and stability within the opposition party. Speaking at the PDP national secretariat in Abuja, Mohammed acknowledged the deepening leadership crisis that has plagued the party.

The PDP has been embroiled in a protracted crisis that has led to factionalisation and a sharp decline in its fortunes. After ruling Nigeria for 16 consecutive years, the party has spent more than a decade in opposition, with many key members—including governors and lawmakers—defecting to other parties. Mohammed, installed as acting chairman through the intervention of key stakeholders, identified his priority as healing the party’s wounds and repositioning it to become more law‑abiding.

To achieve this, he plans an all‑inclusive national convention and intends to hand over the party to a properly elected national working committee after completing outstanding congresses at various levels. Mohammed has already begun consultations with senior party figures and will convene a meeting of the National Executive Committee (NEC) to address pressing internal issues.

His initiative follows a turbulent weekend in which a faction of the PDP suspended several top officials, including the national secretary and legal adviser, over alleged anti‑party activities. Given the PDP’s status as a major opposition force in Nigeria, resolving these internal crises and presenting a united front will be crucial for its bid to regain power in future elections. With Mohammed’s assumption of office, the party appears to be taking steps toward addressing its challenges and repositioning itself for the future, though success will depend on the cooperation of party members and the ability to navigate the complex web of interests within the organization.
