The Peoples Democratic Party’s national chairman, Umar Damagum, has lodged a complaint with Inspector‑General of Police Kayode Egbetokun over an alleged attack on the party’s national secretariat. The incident took place on 3 November 2025 when the suspended national secretary, Samuel Anyanwu, is said to have led a group that forcibly seized the secretariat.
In a petition dated 3 October, Damagum listed several suspended party officials who accompanied Anyanwu, including Abdulrahman Mohammed, Kamaldeen Ajibade, Okechukwu Osuoha and Umaru Bature. The petition alleges that the group attempted to install a factional leadership with the backing of Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike. According to the complaint, the assailants broke into offices, attacked staff and disrupted the secretariat’s activities.
The petition further claims that the attackers used tear gas, guns, knives, cutlasses and sticks, injuring several staff members. A female employee was reportedly resuscitated after suffocating from tear gas, while three others are receiving hospital treatment for their injuries.
The alleged invasion has heightened concerns about the stability and leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party, which has been plagued by internal conflicts. The involvement of high‑ranking officials and a government minister adds complexity to the dispute. Damagum has asked the Inspector‑General of Police to investigate the matter, take appropriate action to prevent further violence, and ensure the safety of the party’s staff and members.
The episode underscores the ongoing power struggles within the party, as rival factions vie for control. As the investigation proceeds, observers will closely monitor the party’s ability to resolve its internal disputes and maintain stability, given the potential implications for its future role in Nigerian politics.
