Delta mass defections painful, disappointing - Damagum laments

The National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Umar Damagum, urged party leaders and members to prepare for the task of rescuing Nigeria. He made the call in Abuja on Wednesday at the Bauchi Governor’s lodge, amid recent developments surrounding the party’s national convention.

A Federal High Court ruling by Justice James Omotosho had cast doubt on the convention, citing non‑compliance with the party’s rules regarding the notification process. However, a subsequent ruling by the Oyo State High Court, presided over by Justice Ladiran Akintola, gave the party the green light to proceed, directing the Independent National Electoral Commission to monitor the event.

Damagum, who assumed leadership of the party in an acting capacity, reflected on the challenges he inherited and emphasized the need for unity among members ahead of the convention. He stressed that the party’s mission to rescue, redirect, and rebuild the country begins in opposition and that members must remain committed to the party’s ideals. The chairman also commended Justice Akintola for his bravery in issuing a ruling that paved the way for the convention.

These court decisions highlight the complexities and challenges the PDP faces in preparing for its national convention. The party has been working to overcome obstacles with a focus on unity and adherence to its core values. Although further challenges are likely, the recent ruling provides relief and momentum.

The national convention is a crucial event that will shape the PDP’s direction in the coming months. With legal hurdles now cleared, the party can concentrate on electing new leaders and charting a course for the future. The outcome will be closely watched, as it will have significant implications for the party’s prospects in upcoming elections.
