FCCPC seals over 10 warehouses over infractions in Kano  — Daily Nigerian

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has sealed more than ten warehouses in Kano, Nigeria, after uncovering alleged infractions involving fabric materials. Director of Surveillance and Investigations Boladale Adeyinka explained that the enforcement action was triggered by verified intelligence concerning the owners’ activities. The commission received reports that retailers were engaging in deceptive sales practices, selling fabric labeled as 10 yards but actually providing nine yards or less while charging the full price. This violates consumer rights under the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act (FCCPA) 2018.

Weeks of market surveillance and intelligence gathering revealed that several retailers were consistently selling fabric below the standard length indicated on the products. The FCCPC’s findings confirmed that consumers were being charged full price for under‑measured goods, a conduct prohibited by Section 123(1) of the FCCPA, which forbids false, misleading, or deceptive representations to consumers.

The sealed warehouses are located in various parts of Kano, including Nakano, Gandun Albasa Layout, and Ibrahim Taiwo Road. Adeyinka expressed concern that such practices not only exploit consumers but also distort the market and threaten fair competition. She noted that honest traders who comply with lawful standards are undermined, potentially reducing consumer choice and entrenching anti‑competitive behavior.

The FCCPC’s enforcement action aims to protect consumers and promote fair competition. By curbing deceptive sales practices, the commission seeks to maintain a level playing field for businesses and ensure that consumers receive accurate information about the products they purchase. The warehouses will remain closed until the owners comply with the relevant regulations and standards, demonstrating the FCCPC’s commitment to enforcing consumer protection laws and fostering a fair, competitive market in Nigeria.
