A faction of Nigeria’s Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has announced the postponement of its Ekiti State gubernatorial primary, which had been scheduled for November 8, 2025. The party cited logistical constraints as the reason for the delay. In a letter to the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the PDP disclosed that both the Ekiti State Congress and the governorship primary have been postponed. The letter, addressed to INEC Chairman Prof. Joash Amupitan, was signed by acting National Chairman Abdulrahman Mohammed and National Secretary Samuel Anyanwu, who indicated that a new date will be communicated once it is decided.

The postponement originates from the PDP faction loyal to Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Wike. This group, led by Mohammed and Anyanwu, represents a significant portion of the party’s structure in Ekiti. By informing INEC of the change, the PDP complies with legal requirements, and the commission will likely await the revised timetable before making further arrangements.

The delay may have implications for the party’s preparations ahead of the upcoming general elections. Conducting a successful primary is crucial for the PDP’s prospects in the Ekiti gubernatorial race, an important contest in Nigeria’s political calendar and a key battleground for major parties. While the postponement could affect the PDP’s chances, the party is expected to announce a new primary date soon.

As Nigeria moves toward the general elections, political parties face pressure to hold effective primaries. Observers will closely monitor how the PDP navigates its internal challenges and whether it can organize a successful primary, as these steps will be pivotal in shaping its performance in the forthcoming elections.
