2027: INEC provides updates on ongoing voter registration

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has assured members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) deployed for the Anambra governorship election that their safety and the prompt payment of election‑duty allowances are priorities. INEC Chairman Prof. Joash Amupitan made the assurance in an interview with journalists in Awka, emphasizing that the welfare and security of corps members serving as ad‑hoc election staff are of utmost importance to the commission and to security agencies.

According to Amupitan, corps members are key stakeholders in the success of the election, and the commission is taking steps to distinguish them from other personnel by deploying them in uniform. He also confirmed that arrangements have been made for the payment of their allowances, stating that everything needed for the Anambra election has been provided.

Regarding security, Amupitan noted that the Nigerian Police, in coordination with other security agencies, have pledged to protect individuals on election duties. He explained that security personnel are already conducting reconnaissance and mop‑up operations in various areas to ensure the safety of voters, poll officials, and corps members. The INEC chairman expressed confidence in these measures, saying that all necessary steps have been taken to guarantee security everywhere.

The Anambra governorship election is scheduled for Saturday, and the deployment of NYSC members as ad‑hoc staff is a crucial aspect of the electoral process. Assurance of safety and timely payment of allowances is expected to boost the morale of the corps members, who will play a vital role in conducting the election. The success of the poll will depend on effective collaboration between INEC, security agencies, and other stakeholders, including the NYSC members. As the election approaches, all eyes are on the authorities to ensure a free, fair, and peaceful process.
