The All Progressives Congress (APC) has dismissed claims of genocide in Nigeria, describing them as “flawed and unreasonable.” Felix Morka, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, made this statement in an interview with ARISE News, emphasizing that the violence in some parts of the country is largely perpetrated by non-state actors rather than government forces.
Morka argued that the security challenges facing Nigeria are real but under control, with the government being proactive in confronting terrorism and protecting civilians. He noted that the military has been making significant progress in its counterterrorism efforts, resulting in a decline in terror-related attacks and casualties. The APC spokesman credited the military for taking the battle to the perpetrators and commended their efforts in confronting shadowy figures who disguise as civilians to unleash violence on innocent Nigerians.
Morka also addressed criticisms from the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), accusing them of hypocrisy and opportunism. He pointed out that Boko Haram’s insurgency began in 2009 when the PDP was in power, and they had the chance to wipe it out in its infancy but failed. The APC spokesman emphasized that terrorism is a global challenge that even world powers like the United States have struggled to overcome, citing the protracted wars in Afghanistan, Iraq, and Yemen.
The APC spokesman urged the international community, particularly the United States, to support Nigeria in its fight against terror rather than condemning the country. He cautioned against alarmist rhetoric, stating that international cooperation, not condemnation, is the solution to Nigeria’s complex security issues. Morka also highlighted President Bola Tinubu’s openness to difficult conversations about state police, constitutional reform, and inclusion, demonstrating the president’s willingness to engage in tough conversations.
Morka reaffirmed that Nigeria remains a sovereign democracy committed to peace and development, and he urged the United States to align with Nigeria’s fight against terror rather than act on misinformation. The APC spokesman’s comments come as the Nigerian government continues to grapple with security challenges, and the international community is watching the situation closely. With the country’s security issues being a major concern, the need for international cooperation and support is becoming increasingly important.
