Institute condemns irregular migration, human trafficking, seeks stronger action

The Chartered Institute of Social Work Practitioners of Nigeria (CISWPN) has warned that irregular migration and human trafficking are escalating social problems with far‑reaching national implications. Speaking at the 16th International Conference on Social Work in Enugu, the institute’s National President and Chairman of Council, Prof. Oluwayemisi Obashoro‑John, highlighted the conference as a platform for professionals and stakeholders to discuss practical solutions to migration, trafficking and youth vulnerability.

Established in 2009 and chartered in 2022, CISWPN has expanded from an initial 200 members to over 15,000 members worldwide. The institute works with international partners such as USAID, UKAID and Italian organizations on projects that promote women’s rights, child welfare and the protection of vulnerable groups. This year’s conference centres on irregular migration and human trafficking, which have become critical social concerns in Nigeria.

Prof. Obashoro‑John stressed that irregular migration is not merely an economic issue but a social one rooted in dignity, justice and human rights. She explained that people resort to irregular migration because of alienation, hopelessness or a lack of opportunities at home. While acknowledging the contributions of agencies like NAPTIP and several NGOs, she called on the government to create more sustainable opportunities for young Nigerians and urged stronger collaboration among local and international partners.

Delegates from across Nigeria are attending the conference with the aim of finding practical solutions to these pressing problems. CISWPN’s commitment to tackling irregular migration and human trafficking is reinforced by its growing membership and international collaborations. As discussions progress, stakeholders are expected to identify effective strategies that can improve the future for young Nigerians and diminish the allure of irregular migration. The outcomes of the conference will be closely watched as Nigeria and other countries confront the complex challenges of migration and human trafficking.
