Kano govt gives telecos, banks 1 week to remove unauthorized billboards, adverts — Daily Nigerian

The Kano State Signage and Advertisement Agency has issued a one‑week ultimatum to banks, telecommunications companies and mobile‑phone firms to remove unauthorized billboard advertisements. Director‑General Kabir Dakata announced the deadline while addressing journalists in Kano, noting that the affected institutions had already been served with a court order to comply with the directive. The order follows the companies’ failure to meet the legal requirements governing outdoor advertising in the state.

According to Mr. Dakata, agency officials visited several banks, telecommunications firms and mobile‑phone companies and served them with the court order, which directs the removal of their billboard advertisements. If the companies do not remove the billboards within the stipulated timeframe, the agency will do so on behalf of the court, with the costs borne by the companies as provided by law. The agency gave the companies until next week to comply, “in the spirit of fairness,” he said.

The agency has established clear procedures for organizations responsible for paying government advertisement levies. After the relevant law came into effect, all billboard owners were required to register within one month. Many failed to meet this requirement, prompting the agency to enforce the legal provisions that obligate them to pay the appropriate advertisement fees.

These actions are part of the agency’s broader effort to regulate outdoor advertising in Kano State, ensuring compliance with laws and regulations while generating revenue for the state government. By removing unauthorized billboards, the agency aims to improve the city’s aesthetic appeal and reduce the risk of accidents caused by poorly maintained or illegally erected structures. The one‑week ultimatum is intended to compel the affected companies to act immediately and avoid further enforcement measures.
