Anambra Decides: Senator Umeh calls for arrest of vote-buyers

Senator Victor Umeh, representing Anambra Central Senatorial Zone, urged authorities to arrest individuals involved in vote buying, emphasizing the need to protect democracy. He made the statement during a press interview after casting his vote at polling unit 019, Aguluzoigbo Town Hall, in Anaocha Local Government Area.

The senator described the election as largely peaceful, noting the absence of malfunctioning BVAS machines or security breaches—a marked improvement over previous elections, where such issues were common. He attributed the calm atmosphere to the presence of security personnel and the efficient functioning of the electoral process.

Umeh stressed the importance of free and fair elections, insisting that leaders should be elected through genuine votes without manipulation or rigging. He warned that vote buying undermines the credibility of the electoral process and urged citizens to reject such practices. According to the senator, those who engage in vote buying harm not only themselves but also their families and the nation.

His comments come amid concerns about the prevalence of vote buying in Nigerian elections. During the August 16 by‑election, numerous reports of vote buying emerged, which Umeh described as a critical issue that must be addressed. He argued that citizens who sell their votes surrender their right to complain about the actions of their elected leaders.

Umeh called for evidence‑based action against those involved in vote buying, stressing that the practice is outlawed and erodes democratic principles. He encouraged voters to make choices based on candidates’ qualifications and character rather than succumbing to financial inducements. By doing so, he believes Nigerians can deepen democracy and ensure their leaders truly represent their interests.

As the electoral process unfolds, Umeh’s remarks highlight the need for vigilance and adherence to democratic principles. His emphasis on free and fair elections aligns with broader goals of promoting good governance and accountability in Nigeria. With final results expected soon, it remains to be seen whether the process will be deemed credible and reflective of the people’s will.
