Two suspects arrested over altered product expiry dates in Jos - NAFDAC

The National Agency for Food, Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) recently raided a warehouse in the Apata community of Jos North Local Government Area, Plateau State, Nigeria, after receiving a consumer complaint about product alteration. The operation led to the arrest of two suspects, Emma Nwobi and Yusuf Hassan, who are accused of tampering with expiration dates on expired products to deceive consumers.

Kenneth Azikiwe, North Central Zone Director of NAFDAC, explained that the suspects removed original dates by cleaning the items with chemicals and then re‑labeling them with new expiration dates. The altered products included wines and hot drinks, which were sold in small quantities to avoid attracting attention. According to Azikiwe, Hassan applied the falsified dates while Nwobi supplied the replacement labels.

The raid is part of NAFDAC’s ongoing effort to ensure product safety and quality, especially ahead of the festive period. The agency has been conducting regular checks on markets, distributors, supermarkets, and other sales outlets. Director‑General Prof. Mojisola Christianah Adeyeye has instructed officials to be extra vigilant during this time to guarantee the safety of all products.

State Coordinator Dr. Obida Musa condemned the illegal activity as “truly unfortunate” and “appalling,” urging the public to exercise caution when purchasing regulated items and to report any suspicious products to NAFDAC. One of the suspects, Yusuf Hassan, claimed he was unaware that the expiration dates had been altered and pleaded for leniency.

NAFDAC is currently leading a nationwide operation to eliminate unregistered, expired, falsified, or banned products that pose health risks, aiming to protect consumers and maintain market safety and quality.
