UN chief calls for  shift to clean energy — Daily Nigerian

United Nations Secretary‑General António Guterres has reiterated his call for a rapid global transition from fossil fuels to clean energy, emphasizing that renewable power is now the most cost‑effective source of new electricity in almost every country. Speaking at the Energy Transition Roundtable in Belém, Brazil, ahead of the COP30 climate conference, Guterres stressed that the shift must be fair, fast and final.

The global energy landscape is undergoing a profound transformation. Green energy sources accounted for 90 % of new power capacity last year and attracted $2 trillion in investment, outpacing fossil fuels by $800 billion. Guterres described this surge as a “renewables revolution,” but warned that the pace must accelerate to ensure that all nations reap the benefits.

Despite these advances, many countries are missing their climate targets. Even with new national climate action plans, global temperatures are still projected to rise above 2 °C above pre‑industrial levels, increasing the frequency of natural disasters and human suffering. To limit warming to 1.5 °C by the end of the century, emissions must be cut by nearly half by 2030 and reach net zero by 2050.

Guterres outlined five priority areas for action: aligning laws and policies with a just energy transition; eliminating fossil‑fuel subsidies; placing people and equity at the centre of the transition; investing in grid infrastructure, energy storage and efficiency; and unlocking finance for developing countries, which currently receive only a small share of global clean‑energy investment.

His appeal comes as the international community prepares for COP30, where climate change and the energy transition will dominate the agenda. With the window for decisive action closing, Guterres’ emphasis on a rapid, equitable shift to clean energy underscores the urgent need for collective effort to confront the global climate crisis.
