Four‑time Formula 1 champion Max Verstappen suffered a shocking elimination in the first qualifying session (Q1) at the 2025 Brazilian Grand Prix, ending up 16th on the grid. The Dutch driver, who trails championship leader Lando Norris by 36 points, had a disappointing weekend at Interlagos—a circuit where he has previously excelled.
Verstappen’s troubles began during the sprint qualifying and sprint race, when he complained about the ride quality and balance of his Red Bull car. Although the team made changes after the sprint, the issues persisted, and he was unable to improve his performance in Q1. After his penultimate lap, he reported that the ride quality was slightly better but the car was still sliding, particularly in Turn 1. His final attempt did not yield the desired result, and he was eliminated from Q2 contention.
Fans took to social media to express their disappointment, with some conceding that the championship fight was effectively over. Reactions ranged from congratulations to Lando Norris on his presumed championship win to criticism of Red Bull for failing to provide Verstappen with a competitive setup. Verstappen’s team radio communications during Q1 revealed his frustration: after his final lap he exclaimed, “Oh my god mate, the car and the ride is a tiny bit better but now sliding in Turn 1.” Race engineer Gianpiero Lambiase offered assistance, but Verstappen replied, “No, I don’t really know what to tell you.” His last message was, “Yeah, I have no grip, zero. Brilliant!”
In contrast, championship contenders Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri advanced to the third qualifying session (Q3), solidifying their positions in the standings. Verstappen’s early elimination has significant implications for the title race, and Red Bull will need to regroup and reassess their strategy to support their driver’s championship bid.
