Nigeria’s democracy is under threat from electoral fraud, voter apathy, and political manipulation as the 2027 general elections approach, according to former governors of Bayelsa and Rivers states, Senator Seriake Dickson and Rotimi Amaechi. The two leaders expressed their concerns at the fifth anniversary lecture of First Daily Newspaper in Abuja, which focused on the theme “2027: How Can We Make Our Votes Count?”
Senator Dickson, who chaired the occasion, described election rigging as a significant threat to the country’s democratic system. He emphasized that when government officials, security agencies, and electoral authorities collude to manipulate results, they undermine the people’s sovereignty. Dickson called on the National Assembly to strengthen electoral laws to prevent such violations and ensure the integrity of the electoral process.
Rotimi Amaechi, former Minister of Transportation, noted that electoral reforms in Nigeria have consistently failed due to the lack of political will from incumbent governments. He attributed this to entrenched political interests and weak opposition parties, which have enabled the manipulation of the electoral system. Amaechi warned that voter apathy is exacerbating the problem, making it easier for electoral fraud to occur.
Dr. Sam Amadi, Director of the Abuja School of Social and Political Thought, delivered the keynote address, highlighting the need for neutrality in the management of elections. He pointed out that the connection between those managing elections and those in power has turned elections into contests of influence rather than a reflection of the people’s will.
The concerns raised by these leaders underscore the significance of electoral integrity in ensuring the legitimacy of Nigeria’s democratic process. As the country prepares for the 2027 general elections, the need for robust electoral reforms and measures to prevent voter apathy has become increasingly pressing.
