TikTok's flip the camera trend: What it is and why people are upset

A concerning trend has emerged on TikTok, sparking widespread criticism and accusations of bullying. The pattern involves a group of youths asking someone to record them dancing, only to reveal the recorder at the end, often with the intention of mocking them. The trend appears to have originated in late October with a video by TikTok creator @jaycrudddy, which has amassed 1.3 million views.

Critics argue that the person chosen to record is frequently a target the dancers wish to humiliate—a less popular peer, someone struggling with homelessness, or an elderly individual. The punchline of the video typically comes at the expense of the recorder, leaving them embarrassed or ashamed. Many users have labeled the practice a form of bullying.

Social media users have voiced strong disapproval across platforms. Instagram user @coquettesvanilla, who has over 41,400 followers, described the trend as “straight up bullying” that can make people feel insecure and “like they’re not good enough.” She emphasized the importance of promoting respect and kindness online rather than tearing others down. Similar sentiments were expressed by @hhyy1037, who called the trend “disgusting,” and by popular TikTok creator @Tinx, who has 1.5 million followers. @Tinx labeled the trend “cruel” and “mean‑spirited,” noting that it not only hurts the target but also reflects poorly on the participants.

The controversy highlights the need for social‑media users to be mindful of the impact of their actions. As these platforms play an increasingly significant role in modern life, fostering a culture of respect, empathy, and kindness online is essential. By speaking out against trends that perpetuate bullying and humiliation, users can help create a more positive and supportive online community. The backlash serves as a reminder to consider the potential consequences of one’s actions on social media and to treat others with dignity and respect.
