Osimhen's double set Nigeria past Gabon into DR Congo final in world cup qualifying

Nigeria advanced to the African playoff final after a 4-1 victory over Gabon in a thrilling semifinal. The match, which seemed headed for a penalty shootout, turned dramatic in extra time when substitute Chidera Ejuke and star striker Victor Osimhen scored crucial goals.

The game began tensely, with both sides creating chances. Nigeria’s Akor Adams broke the deadlock with a late goal, but Gabon’s Mario Lemina equalised with a deflected shot in the final minute of regulation, sending the contest into extra time. Nigeria then seized momentum: Ejuke restored the lead, and Osimhen—reigning African Footballer of the Year and last season’s UEFA Champions League top scorer—added two more, sealing the win.

Osimhen’s performance cemented his status as Nigeria’s talisman, his goals securing the team’s place in the African playoff final. Nigeria will meet the Democratic Republic of Congo, who eliminated Cameroon 1‑0 in the other semifinal, on Sunday. The winner of that final in Rabat will earn a spot in the six‑team intercontinental playoffs next March, where two final tickets to the 2026 World Cup—co‑hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico—will be at stake.

The 2026 World Cup is expected to be highly competitive, with top teams worldwide vying for qualification. The intercontinental playoffs will give teams like Nigeria a chance to secure a place in the tournament. With their victory over Gabon, Nigeria has taken a significant step toward qualifying for the World Cup, and their performance in the African playoff final will be crucial in determining their chances of advancing to the intercontinental playoffs.
