Mohbad’s family bars Wunmi from using surname

The family of the late Nigerian singer Mohbad has taken a significant step in the ongoing paternity dispute with his widow, Wunmi, by prohibiting her from using the family surname, Aloba. This decision comes as the family awaits the outcome of a DNA test to confirm the paternity of Wunmi’s son, Liam, and is part of their effort to clarify the relationship between Wunmi and the deceased singer following his controversial death on September 12, 2023.

Mohbad’s death sparked widespread public outcry after reports that he had received an injection from an auxiliary nurse. An autopsy was conducted after his body was exhumed, but the investigation hit a snag in May 2025 when pathologists were unable to determine the cause of death.

In a recent statement, family head Omolayo Aloba and Mohbad’s father Joseph Aloba jointly announced that Wunmi is not permitted to use the Aloba surname, citing that she was not legally married to the late singer. According to the family, the required Yoruba traditional rites, including the payment of bride price, were not completed. The statement also named Oladayo Ogungbe as the family’s sole representative for the DNA case and Mohbad’s estate, while Wahab Shittu will continue to handle matters related to the investigation into the singer’s death.

The family indicated that Wunmi and her son, Liam, will be included in the estate administration process once the DNA test confirms Liam’s paternity. This development highlights the complexities surrounding Mohbad’s death and the subsequent dispute over his estate. As the investigation continues, the family’s decision to restrict Wunmi’s use of the Aloba surname adds a new layer to the ongoing saga, and the outcome of the DNA test will likely play a significant role in determining the next steps in estate administration and the resolution of the paternity dispute.
