Professor Pat Utomi, a prominent figure in the Labour Party, has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to promptly initiate a review of the election results in twelve states. These states include Lagos, Rivers, Delta, Imo, Akwa-Ibom, Plateau, Benue, Kaduna, Adamawa, Taraba, Bayelsa, and Bauchi. Utomi made this appeal while addressing journalists in Lagos on Friday.
He emphasized the necessity for INEC to establish a review committee that includes representatives from all political parties. “We ask for an immediate review of the voting from last week in twelve states, including Lagos, Rivers, Delta, Imo, Akwa-Ibom, Plateau, Benue, Kaduna, Adamawa, Taraba, Bayelsa, and Bauchi,” he stated. Utomi insisted that INEC should begin the review process without delay, collecting all relevant materials from these states and bringing them to Abuja, where stakeholders would feel less threatened.
Furthermore, he called for each political party to appoint respected individuals to the review panel, ensuring that the process is open and transparent to the public and the media. “Unless they do this, they have shown that they are not true democrats. It should be done immediately, as it will enable INEC to reach a useful resolution,” he added. In cases where disputes arise from the review, Utomi asserted that all parties should seek judicial resolution based on the findings from these contentious states, ultimately granting the mandate to the candidate supported by the numbers.
