A recent Nigerian Air Force airstrike in the Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger killed Babangida, a notorious bandit sub‑commander and trusted lieutenant of kingpin Dogo Gideh. According to a credible security source, Babangida succumbed to injuries sustained during the strike on November 18, which took place on the outskirts of the Kurebe community and also neutralized several other terrorists.

The death of Babangida has significantly weakened the Gideh faction, which has been responsible for numerous high‑profile attacks across parts of Niger and neighboring states. However, intelligence sources suggest that the recent abduction of schoolchildren in Kebbi and Niger may be a retaliatory move by fighters loyal to the slain commander, aimed at demonstrating their capacity after suffering heavy losses from sustained air and ground operations.

Community leaders from nearby villages visited the residence of Gideh’s mother in Palleli on November 19, where she was seen mourning the loss of her son’s closest aide. A senior security source confirmed that Babangija’s killing is a major success but warned that the group may attempt further reprisals against civilians and security personnel. Consequently, relevant security agencies have been placed on heightened alert to forestall additional attacks and protect vulnerable communities.

Residents have expressed relief, hoping that the commander’s death will lead to a reduction in the violent raids that have plagued the area for years. The Nigerian Air Force reiterated its commitment to sustained offensive operations, focusing on preventing retaliatory attacks and rescuing abducted victims across the affected states. This development is seen as a significant blow to the Gideh faction and a positive step toward enhancing security in the region.
