Rivers safe, ready for business – Fubara dismisses claims of insecurity

Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara dismissed recent media reports that the state is unsafe, calling the claims misleading and politically motivated. Speaking at an amateur golf championship in Port Harcourt, he pointed to the strong turnout of guests and athletes from across Africa as proof that the negative portrayals are unfounded.

Governor Fubara acknowledged that Rivers State endured six months of disruption due to political tensions, but he said the situation has now stabilized. He attributed the adverse coverage to a deliberate effort to cast the state in a bad light, noting that “more than half of the things you read in the media are not true.” His administration’s goal, he said, is to change the narrative and remind everyone that Rivers State is safe.

He praised the joint security agencies for restoring and maintaining peace, which has allowed his government to resume its activities. The governor also reaffirmed his commitment to supporting sporting events, announcing plans to revive the Governor’s Cup tournament and to upgrade facilities at the golf club. Additional government support will strengthen activities that attract national and international participation.

Major General Emmanuel Eric Emekah, General Officer Commanding 6 Division of the Nigerian Army, said the decision to host the tournament in Port Harcourt was based on the prevailing peace in the state, and the successful event reinforced confidence in that choice. The tournament featured golfers from eight African countries and 36 clubs across Nigeria, demonstrating the state’s capacity to host international events.

The governor’s assurance of safety and his support for sports are intended to boost Rivers State’s reputation and draw more international participation. With the situation now stable, the state is poised to regain its status as a hub for sporting and economic activities. The revival of the Governor’s Cup and the upgraded golf facilities are expected to promote a positive image of the state and foster economic growth.
