Former Kano State governorship candidate Inuwa Waya announced on Wednesday that he will not seek the governorship under the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general elections. Speaking to journalists in Kano after a strategic meeting with his campaign team, Waya said personal reflection and a desire to contribute to the state’s progress in other capacities motivated his decision. He affirmed his continued support for initiatives that promote unity and good governance in Kano and reiterated his commitment to the APC.
Waya expressed openness to forming alliances with credible individuals and groups both within and outside the party, emphasizing that collaboration and unity are essential for the APC’s repositioning ahead of 2027. Reflecting on the party’s loss in the 2023 elections, he attributed the defeat to poor leadership, a lack of coordinated campaign strategy, and internal miscalculations. He urged the APC and its members to learn from these mistakes, stressing the need for genuine reforms, internal discipline, and strategic planning to regain public trust and return to winning ways.
The former governorship aspirant commended Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for his efforts in infrastructural and social development across the state, urging the governor to continue ongoing projects and prioritize progress over partisan differences. As a former senior official of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, Waya has remained an active figure in Kano’s political landscape.
The APC has been working to recover from the outcome of the 2023 governorship election, which initially declared the New Nigeria People’s Party the winner. The party is conducting internal reviews and consultations as it prepares for 2027. Governor Yusuf’s administration, focused on infrastructure, social welfare, and urban renewal projects, has shaped political discourse in Kano through the visibility of his programs. Waya’s decision not to contest in 2027 is expected to have implications for the state’s political landscape as the APC seeks to reposition itself ahead of the next election cycle.
