The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State has criticised Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, for his comments on the conviction of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). In a statement titled “Kanu’s Conviction: Obi Calls for Dialogue, Healing Over Hostility,” issued by his media aide Ibrahim Umar, Obi described Kanu’s arrest, detention and sentencing as unfortunate, arguing that the process reflected leadership gaps and might heighten tensions rather than reduce them.
In response, Lagos APC spokesman Seye Oladejo released a statement on Sunday warning that it is inappropriate for political actors to comment on matters still undergoing judicial review. Oladejo cautioned that such remarks could be interpreted as undermining national security institutions or court processes, and he said Obi’s comments risk politicising a sensitive security issue. He urged public figures to avoid statements that could inflame public sentiment.
Oladejo’s statement emphasised the need for consistent and balanced engagement when addressing national‑security and public‑order issues. He stressed that all parties should respect judicial outcomes while allowing room for lawful appeal and dialogue where necessary. The APC spokesperson added that national‑security matters should not be influenced by political considerations and advised leaders to prioritise unity and stability in their public communication.
The Federal Government, according to Oladejo, remains committed to handling issues related to terrorism, treason and national stability in accordance with the law and the constitution. The APC’s reaction to Obi’s comments highlights the sensitivity surrounding Kanu’s conviction, which has sparked debate about national security, justice and political leadership in Nigeria. The case also raises concerns about the impact of political discourse on the country’s stability and the need for responsible public commentary on matters of national importance. As the situation continues to unfold, it remains to be seen how the various stakeholders will navigate the complex issues at play.
