The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, has approved the voluntary request of Orji Orji, Executive Secretary and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI), to commence his statutory terminal leave. This decision comes before the end of Orji’s five‑year tenure, which is scheduled to conclude on 19 February 2026. Akume, who also chairs the NEITI National Stakeholders Working Group (NSWG), confirmed the development in a statement released by Segun Imohiosen, Director of Information and Public Relations in the SGF office, following Orji’s formal notification in full compliance with public service regulations.

The Federal Government commended Orji for his distinguished service to the nation and to the global Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) community. During his tenure, he championed the establishment of the NEITI Data Centre, reinforcing Nigeria’s standing as a leading and credible EITI‑implementing country. The government reiterated its commitment to safeguarding NEITI’s independence, strengthening its statutory mandate, and preserving the transparency reforms essential to the country’s extractive sector and national development. In a statement on behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the NSWG, the government conveyed its best wishes to Orji, acknowledging his meritorious and accomplished service.

Orji’s terminal leave marks the beginning of a transition period for NEITI, an agency crucial to promoting transparency and accountability in Nigeria’s extractive industries. The initiative’s work ensures that natural resources are managed responsibly and sustainably, and that the benefits of extraction are shared equitably among all stakeholders. As NEITI prepares for new leadership, the Federal Government’s dedication to transparency and accountability in the sector remains steadfast. Strengthening the initiative’s mandate and preserving its independence are vital for maintaining investor confidence and fostering sustainable development. With Orji’s departure, NEITI will continue to build on the progress achieved during his tenure while addressing the ongoing challenges facing Nigeria’s extractive industries.
