Naira records highest appreciation against dollar since Trump's tarrif pause

The Nigerian naira began the week on a positive note, gaining ground against the U.S. dollar in the official market. Data from the Central Bank of Nigeria show that the naira strengthened to N1,453.84 per dollar on Monday, a N2.88 appreciation from the N1,456.72 level recorded at the close of trading on Friday. This upward movement is notable, especially after last week’s performance, which saw more losses than gains.

In contrast, the black‑market rate remained unchanged, with the naira trading at N1,465 per dollar on Monday. Meanwhile, the country’s foreign reserves have risen to $44.26 billion as of November 21, 2025, according to the apex bank. The increase in reserves could help support the naira’s stability in the foreign‑exchange market.

The naira’s appreciation in the official market is a positive sign for an economy that has been navigating currency fluctuations and broader economic challenges. The foreign‑exchange market is closely watched because it affects trade, investment, and inflation. As the week unfolds, market participants will monitor the naira’s performance, considering global economic trends, monetary‑policy decisions, and domestic indicators.

Stability of the naira is crucial for sustaining economic growth and attracting foreign investment, making its movements worth tracking. With the current level of foreign reserves and the modest appreciation of the naira, there is a sense of cautious optimism about the currency’s prospects. However, the foreign‑exchange market remains inherently volatile, and ongoing monitoring of economic fundamentals and policy decisions is necessary to fully understand the naira’s trajectory. The resilience of the Nigerian economy and its ability to adapt to global shifts will be key in determining the naira’s performance in the coming days and weeks.
