Healthcare experts in Lagos are urging an urgent overhaul of the referral process, including the implementation of a real‑time digital bed‑availability system, to combat the persistent “no bed syndrome” in the state’s hospitals. The appeal was voiced at the 2025 Opening Ceremony and Scientific Conference of the Medical Guild, Lagos State, where the theme centered on “The No Bed Conundrum and Safe Referral: Exploring an Integrated and Effective Referral System in Lagos.”

Dr. Babayemi Osinaike, Head of Emergency Medicine at Lagos University Teaching Hospital, stressed that technology‑driven solutions are essential to prevent needless deaths caused by delayed referrals. He called for a policy that enables seamless referrals between hospitals, whether state or federal, noting that patients in Lagos are simply “patients seeking help,” not “federal or state patients.” Osinaike also highlighted the overcrowding of tertiary hospitals, often due to patients presenting with conditions that could be managed virtually or at primary health centres. He advocated for a state policy allowing individuals with mild symptoms to consult doctors online or via dedicated phone lines, citing the COVID‑19 pandemic’s lessons on the effectiveness of virtual consultations.

The expert proposed developing a coordinated digital platform where all Lagos hospitals can update their bed availability in real time. Such a system, he believes, would markedly improve the referral process by allowing doctors to check bed availability across facilities before making a referral, thereby saving lives.

Dr. Olufemi Omololu, a public health specialist, emphasized the importance of situational awareness in enhancing patient‑doctor communication. He identified poor communication as a silent driver of conflict, misdiagnosis, and litigation, and argued that situational awareness helps doctors perceive their environment, understand patient emotions, and anticipate crises.

Chairman of the Medical Guild, Dr. Moruf Abdulsalam, reiterated the Guild’s commitment to advocating for better healthcare policies and improved welfare for doctors. He explained that this year’s theme was chosen deliberately in response to mounting pressure on Lagos’s emergency care system, and affirmed the Guild’s goal of exploring practical solutions to ensure no patient is left stranded by the “no bed” challenge.

Collectively, the experts’ call for a comprehensive overhaul of the referral system and the adoption of digital solutions aims to resolve the long‑standing bed shortage in Lagos hospitals, ultimately improving patient outcomes and the overall efficiency of the healthcare system.
