Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State welcomed President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a national emergency on security, calling it a crucial step to confront the escalating threats of terrorism and banditry across Nigeria. He made the remarks while opening the 34th Executive Council Meeting, assuring that Kano is taking proactive measures against banditry in the affected local government areas of Shanono, Bagwai and Tsanyawa, which border Katsina State.

Recent security operations have yielded some successes. In Shanono, forces repelled an attack, neutralising 19 bandits and seizing their weapons. Nevertheless, criminal activity persists, exemplified by the recent kidnapping of ten villagers. Governor Yusuf reiterated Kano’s commitment to tackling the menace decisively, pledging to allocate all necessary resources to ensure the safety and security of its citizens.

The governor’s statement comes against a backdrop of rising insecurity nationwide, with frequent attacks by terrorist groups and bandits in various regions. President Tinubu’s national emergency declaration aims to strengthen the country’s response to these threats and restore peace and stability. Kano’s efforts form part of a broader strategy that includes increased collaboration between security agencies and state governments.

Given Kano’s proximity to Katsina—a region heavily affected by banditry—its role in the national effort is critical. Governor Yusuf’s pledge to deploy all required resources underscores the state’s dedication to protecting its people and contributing to Nigeria’s overall security. With the national emergency and state‑level initiatives like Kano’s, the country is taking concrete steps toward a safer environment for its citizens.
