Over 27, 980 job seekers apply for teaching positions in Abia

Abia State Governor Alex Otti announced that 27,980 individuals have applied for the second batch of teachers’ recruitment, far exceeding the 4,000 positions available. He made the disclosure during his monthly press briefing at Government House in Umuahia, stressing that the recruitment will be transparent and merit‑based. “If you qualify, you will be employed,” the governor said, adding that personal connections or favoritism will not influence the selection and that only qualifications will determine the successful candidates.

Regarding the first batch of teachers’ recruitment, Governor Otti said efforts are underway to resolve a payment glitch, with the aim of settling the outstanding amounts by the end of the weekend. This intervention is expected to bring relief to the affected teachers. He also revealed plans to gradually clear the backlog of unpaid gratuities in the state, which dates back roughly 20 years. A committee’s report on the matter has been received, paving the way for a phased offset of the outstanding payments.

The high number of applications underscores the strong demand for employment in the education sector. Governor Otti’s commitment to a transparent recruitment process, coupled with his actions to address payment issues and the gratuities backlog, represent significant steps toward improving teachers’ welfare and the overall education system in Abia State. As the recruitment progresses, the state government’s ability to fulfill these promises will be closely watched, with potential implications for both the education sector and the state’s economy.
