Lagos State farmers anticipate a further drop in rice prices ahead of the holiday season after Governor Babajide Sanwo‑Olu reduced the price of Lagos rice from N64,000 to N57,000 per bag. The governor’s decision is expected to intensify competition and push prices lower.
Sakin Agbayewa, Vice Chairman of the All Farmers Association Southwest (Lagos State chapter), praised the move, saying it will likely trigger another price reduction within a few weeks. He noted that foreign rice currently sells for N52,000 to N56,000 per 50 kg bag, depending on location, but emphasized that Lagos rice, priced at N57,000, offers superior quality and food safety compared with imported rice that may have been stored for years.
Raphael Hunsa, Chairman of the Rice Farmers Association of Nigeria (Lagos State chapter), also welcomed the initiative, highlighting its benefits for Nigerians during the upcoming Christmas season. He urged the government to continue supporting rice farmers to boost production, which would help stabilize the staple’s price. Hunsa explained that a steady supply from local farmers throughout the year would keep rice prices stable.
The price reduction is expected to provide consumers with affordable, high‑quality rice during the holiday period, while also strengthening the local rice industry and reducing reliance on imports. As demand for rice rises during Christmas, the lower price should be well received, offering relief to households and contributing to the local economy. The Lagos State Government’s policy aligns with its broader effort to make rice more accessible and to support local farmers in increasing production, thereby decreasing dependence on imported rice.
