Governor Alex Otti visits Nnamdi Kanu in Sokoto prison

Abia State Governor Alex Otti visited Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, at the Sokoto Correctional Centre on Sunday. The visit was confirmed by Kanu’s special counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, and by Prince Emmanuel Kanu, both of whom posted about the development on their Facebook pages.

According to Ejimakor, Governor Otti had previously promised to visit Kanu, and he thanked the governor for fulfilling that promise. He described Otti as “a man of your words” and expressed hope that the visit would be the first step toward ending Kanu’s “undeserved ordeal.” Prince Emmanuel Kanu also commented, noting that Governor Otti and the people of Sokoto had made a unified statement by visiting his brother.

The visit follows Kanu’s sentencing to life imprisonment. After the sentencing, Governor Otti announced that plans were already underway to secure Kanu’s release. He claimed to have initiated a strategy during the trial and to have activated it after the verdict.

Kanu, the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, has been a prominent figure in the region’s separatist movement, and his imprisonment has sparked controversy and debate, with some calling for his release. Governor Otti’s visit is seen as a significant development in the case, though its impact on efforts to secure Kanu’s freedom remains uncertain.

The visit underscores Governor Otti’s ongoing attempts to address the situation surrounding Kanu’s incarceration. As the case continues to unfold, further developments and reactions from various stakeholders are expected, reflecting the sensitive and complex nature of the issue and its significant implications for the region and its people.
