Vaccine research partnership signed between FUTH Lafia and NIPRD

The Federal University Teaching Hospital, Lafia, in Nasarawa State, has entered into a partnership with the National Institute of Pharmaceutical Research and Development to advance vaccine research and development. The collaboration, formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding, aims to enhance the growth of vaccine research and address the needs of Nasarawa State and beyond.

The signing ceremony, chaired by the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Ali Pate, was attended by the Chief Medical Director of FUTH Lafia, Dr. Hassan Ikrama, and the Director General of NIPRD, Dr. Obi Adigwe. The agreement brings together the expertise of NIPRD, a center of excellence in pharmaceutical research, and FUTH Lafia, which will provide study participants and laboratory services for research trials.

According to Minister Pate, the partnership will focus on research and development of vaccines and drugs to protect people and treat Lassa Fever patients. The collaboration is expected to strengthen Nigeria’s healthcare system, which is currently experiencing significant momentum driven by international partnerships, technological innovations, and private-sector support.

Dr. Adigwe, the Director General of NIPRD, expressed appreciation for the minister’s support and commended the commitment of the Chief Medical Director of FUTH Lafia to the success of the exercise. Dr. Ikrama, in turn, praised the Federal Government’s commitment to the health sector, particularly in the areas of vaccines and research innovation.

The partnership is a significant step forward in addressing the health challenges facing Nigeria, including the threat of Lassa Fever. The hospital has pledged to continue investing in research to combat dangerous diseases that pose a threat to human life. With this collaboration, Nigeria is poised to make significant strides in vaccine research and development, ultimately strengthening its healthcare system and improving the health and well-being of its citizens.
