Two members of the Zamfara State House of Assembly have resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC, citing internal conflicts and leadership problems. Shamsudeen Hassan, representing Talata‑Mafara North, and Nura Dahiru, representing Birnin‑Magaji, submitted their resignation letters on December 3. Speaker Bilyaminu Moriki read the letters aloud during a House session.
Hassan said the party’s persistent crises, internal divisions, poor leadership, and marginalisation of members at the state and local levels forced his decision. He argued that remaining in the APC no longer aligned with his political convictions or his constituents’ interests. Hassan thanked the APC for the opportunities he had while a member and asked that his resignation be treated as formal notice of his exit.
Dahiru explained that resigning would allow him to pursue causes that better represent the people he serves. After leaving the APC, he formally defected to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Zamfara State. He also thanked the APC for the opportunities he received and requested that his resignation be accepted as formal notification of his departure.
These resignations underscore the ongoing internal challenges facing the APC in Zamfara State, where leadership issues and conflicts have created divisions among members. Dahiru’s defection to the PDP could affect the state’s political landscape, especially ahead of future elections. The APC, long the dominant party in Zamfara, now struggles to maintain unity and cohesion, while the PDP seeks to exploit the APC’s weaknesses to gain ground. As the political environment continues to evolve, the impact of these developments on Zamfara’s and Nigeria’s broader politics remains to be seen.
