A non‑denominational group, the Nigeria Christian Youth Forum (Abia State chapter), urged Abians to vote for the Action People’s Party’s governorship candidate, Mascot Uzor Kalu, on Saturday. Speaking to the press in Umuahia, the group explained that their decision followed a careful assessment of Kalu’s extensive experience in both public service and the private sector, a discussion that took place at their meeting on Thursday, March 2.
Eugene Okonta, president of the forum, said, “We have found him worthy to deliver, when elected, as the governor of Abia State. The endorsement of Sir Mascot Uzor Kalu came after a thorough and studious process as our gubernatorial candidate for the Saturday, 11 March governorship election in the state. We believe that he will fulfill the mandate of Abians if given the opportunity to serve.”
The youths also commended all Nigerians for turning out in large numbers and participating actively in the recently concluded presidential and National Assembly elections. They noted, however, that those elections were marred by irregularities, including falsification of figures, voter intimidation, and disenfranchisement caused by the late arrival of materials at polling units.
Okonta urged voters not to feel dejected or hopeless because they think their votes did not count. “At this stage, let us remember that power still lies in the hands of the people. We are urging the youth, especially, to add more zeal to avoid a repetition of what happened in some parts of the country during the presidential and National Assembly elections,” he said.
Finally, the forum appealed to INEC to maintain a neutral and impartial stance during the forthcoming gubernatorial and House of Assembly elections scheduled for 11 March across the country.
