Osun 2026: PDP postpones governorship primary amid crisis

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Zamfara State is urging the creation of a regional security committee to confront the escalating insecurity in Northern Nigeria. Party Publicity Secretary Haliru Andi announced the proposal on Friday in Gusau, the state capital, suggesting that Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State head the committee. Andi highlighted Governor Lawal’s recent position paper on insecurity, presented at the Northern Governors’ Forum and the Northern Emirs meeting in Kaduna, as evidence of his suitability for the role.

The envisioned committee would bring together Northern leaders—including governors, traditional rulers, and civil‑society groups—to devise strategies aimed at curbing banditry, kidnapping, terrorism and other criminal activities that have plagued the region. By uniting these stakeholders, the committee could coordinate a comprehensive response, leveraging the expertise and resources of each participant to address the root causes of violence.

Governor Lawal’s experience in tackling insecurity in Zamfara State further supports his candidacy. His policies and initiatives have shown promise in reducing crime locally, and his leadership could help replicate these successes across the broader region. The committee’s effectiveness will depend on its ability to foster collaboration among diverse actors and develop actionable plans that restore peace and stability.

As violent crimes continue to rise, resulting in loss of life and displacement, the establishment of a regional security committee represents a crucial step toward a lasting solution for Northern Nigeria’s security challenges. By providing a coordinated framework, the committee has the potential to make a significant impact in restoring safety and confidence throughout the region.
