Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum disclosed that his administration spent roughly N100 billion on security interventions in 2022 to stabilize communities plagued by insurgency and criminal attacks. He made the statement during a condolence visit to Emir of Uba, Ali Ibn Mamza, after a series of attacks in the Askira/Uba axis. The visit allowed the governor to sympathize with the affected people, assess the current security situation, and explore both immediate and long‑term solutions.
Governor Zulum praised the cooperation between security agencies and local residents, which led to the successful rescue of twelve abducted female farmers. He stressed that such collaboration is essential for restoring peace in the region. He also expressed concern that insecurity hampers development projects, noting that contractors are reluctant to work in certain areas due to persistent threats. This hesitancy has slowed the reconstruction of key infrastructure, including major roads.
To mitigate these challenges, the government has established a quarry site in Gwoza and procured 100 trucks for the state’s Road Maintenance Agency to carry out direct construction and rehabilitation works. Governor Zulum reaffirmed his commitment to delivering transformative infrastructure for the people of Askira/Uba, including a new tertiary institution, a computer institute, a JAMB centre, a hospital, roads, and other social amenities. He pledged to intensify collaboration with security operatives to further strengthen safety in the region.
Emir Ali Ibn Mamza thanked the governor for his visit and for the numerous development projects across the state, acknowledging that the community would have suffered more without Zulum’s interventions. The governor’s administration continues to tackle Borno’s security challenges, and the recent expenditure on security interventions underscores its dedication to restoring peace and stability. The visit highlights the importance of community engagement and cooperation in addressing the state’s security issues.
